Application

  • What sort of profession in the wizarding world would you choose and why?
I would probably work at Flourish & Blotts in order to have access to reference resources and keep the goblin bill-collectors at bay. I want my career to be a place where I can learn new things and be mildly challenged. But I want my job to be something I walk away from at the end of the day. My passions are things I prefer to perfect on my own - secret projects that I don’t want to mix with my day job. I would rather work alone, or perhaps with one or two trusted co-conspirators, to craft them just the way I want them. Then, maybe, if I’m pleased with how they turn out, I might choose to share them.
  • If you could teach one class at Hogwarts, what would it be and why?
I would want to be the librarian. Some of the same reasons as above, but also that I am more comfortable with things than people. I would enjoy finding a way to bring order to the chaos, cataloguing and organizing. And, I would enjoy helping the more advanced students find the information they need, regardless of the source. This career choice also earns bonus points for having access to the restricted section.
  • This year, The TriWizard Tournament is being held once again and you're of age. Do you put your name in the Goblet? Why or why not?
No. I don’t want to be the name on the banner. I would rather be the power behind it. Same rewards, much less risk. If I was entered against my wishes, like Harry, I would enjoy coming up with the best strategy for each task, but I would rather do it from the sidelines and let others face the dangers.
  • If you could choose your animagus form, what would it be and why?
A housecat. Cats have always been a part of my life and they are the animal I most identify with. They always turn up in unexpected places. They get into trouble every time you look away, but act so innocent that you usually end up blaming the dog. Cats manage to wriggle their way into all manner of mischief, yet always find their way out of danger without so much as a bent whisker.
  • What HP character do you identify with most and why?
Severus Snape. I want to do the right thing, but I don’t like or want to be part of the team that writes the inspirational speeches. I would rather come up with the plan to save the day, carry it out in secret, and sit back and watch as everything falls into place. Except I would like a different result, of course.
  • What would you see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised?
I truly don’t know. I know for this application I should answer every question. But I have pondered deeply, trying to find my deepest, most desperate desire, and I really don’t know. I guess that in and of itself should tell you something about me, so I will let my pseudo-answer be for now.
  • If you won a million dollars, how would you spend it?
To travel the world. I honestly don’t think it would change my life very much, but I would travel more and eat in expensive restaurants more often.
  • What was your ideal job as a kid? Has that changed? What is your ideal job now?
When I was a child, I wanted to be a teacher. I love teaching advanced individuals to master their craft, and I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to make them grasp the complexities and interconnections of their subject. However, I also discovered that I’ve little patience for slow learners and a low tolerance for mistakes, so obviously this would not be the best career choice for me. I no longer have an ideal job, because I don’t want my job and my life to be the same thing. I want a job that I can walk away from at the end of the day and not think about anymore. Not one that defines me.
  • If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it, and what would you call it?
A truth detecting spell that would allow the user to determine not truth, but the degree of honesty in a statement. This spell would have no outward indicator, so the target would be unaware of its use. The user would be able to determine to what degree the target was evading or misleading, ranging from slight self-deception to deliberate misdirection to complete fabrication. The incantation would be “gradus verus,” although a skilled practitioner would invoke it nonverbally.
  • If you were to face a boggart, what would it turn into? And what does it turn into when you throw the counter-spell, Riddikulus?
Probably, the boggart would turn into me, but crazed, manic, and clearly out of control. Riddikulus would turn it into a wizard chess piece – the queen to be precise. One of the most important pieces in any well-designed strategy.
  • What do you look for in a friend?
Someone who is crazy enough to amuse me and join me in my schemes, smart enough to teach me something new, and brave enough to not care what anyone else thinks of them.
  • What trait most annoys you about other people?
Hypocrisy. Nobody’s perfect. But when people go out of their way to brag about something and their actions demonstrate the opposite, it drives me crazy. It’s fine for them to be imperfect as long as they don’t start preaching about it.
  • What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?
I’m an excellent planner who can always find a way to accomplish my goals. I’m creative and can solve problems in unexpected ways. I’m intelligent enough to outmaneuver most opponents. I understand the long-term goal and can patiently wait until the timing is right. I’m persuasive and can bend people to my cause when I need to.
  • What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?
When the situation gets out of my control, I get extremely stressed and emotional. I’m naturally a secretive person, so I don’t open up to people easily. Although I understand people well, I have difficulty using this understanding to relate to them. When I talk, I speak my mind, and I sometimes alienate others when I say something they don’t want to hear. Also, I come across as arrogant and manipulative when I fill out surveys like this one, but I’m really not that bad.
  • Define in your own words the following key traits:

    • Courage: Being true to yourself, regardless of what other people think.
    • Loyalty: Standing by your friends, even when they’re wrong.
    • Intelligence: Knowing enough to realize how little you understand, and continuing to try anyway.
    • Ambition: Coming up with a plan to get what you want and doing whatever it takes to carry it out.

  • Name: K. C.
  • Age: 30
  • Where did you find out about us?
I keep following links from profiles and stories that take me to members only sites. First, the common room for one of the houses, (I won’t say which lest I bias the sorting), but then Sugar Quill and other sites too. Eventually, I decided I should join and find out what it’s all about.
