If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
To have people better understand each other in all aspects of life. To be able to get people to see the other side of an issue even if they don’t believe it, and at least understand where it’s coming from. Not only in personal issues like religion and racism, but in scientific, academic, and political stances as well. For example having people better understand the scientific merit of studies concerning conservation issues (i.e. politicians vs industry vs science and academia) to really get something done and change things.

What makes a person respectable?
Personal and professional integrity, and a desire to have love (be it family, friends, loved ones..) as a part of your life without compromise. You have to keep a balance in your life between work and a personal life and I respect people that can say no to work so they can keep a personal life much more than those that forsake one for long hard hours.

What do you look for in a friend?
Humour, kindness and acceptance primarily. Although having odd quirks is definitely a bonus as well as it keeps life interesting. Also having qualities that differ from my own is often excellent as we can fill in for the other’s weaknesses. A willingness for adventure and a desire to try new things is also good. A sense of self-awareness and confidence in really knowing yourself is also good, since people like that will seldom try and be something they’re not.

What are your hobbies?
I play sports (soccer, swimming, biking, rock climbing primarily), read, learn about film making, do photography, play video games, do cross-stitch, write, and collect miniatures to name a few. My most expensive and least exercised hobby is travel, which I absolutely love to do.

Have or would you give time and money to a charity?
I’ve given money and time to charities before and would again. I think there are a great many charities that are worthwhile and need both time and money from whomever they can get it, and they have realistic and important goals they want to achieve.

What is the one thing you would most like to accomplish?
In a nutshell, ‘save the world’. Not in an eco-freak kind of way, but I really want to make a difference in conservation efforts around the world, in a way that causes real change however small it may be. I want my research or my work to mean something, to do something for the future of the world.

Who is your role model?
My parents, hands down. They are both fabulous people who are very well respected in their field of work as well as by their friends and family. They managed to raise a family while attaining the kind of recognition at work that I long for, while having great friends and family as well and keeping their marriage strong. They’ve made it through hard times and good times and work diligently in both professional and volunteer work without sacrificing their personal lives.

What trait most annoys you about other people?
‘Voluntary’ ignorance; when there is knowledge and evidence refuting an opinion or a way of thinking and someone is not even willing to listen to it or think that they might be wrong. One example being racism where one group believes they are genetically better than another group when the science says otherwise. When people use religious texts out of context and change it around to fit their own beliefs without acknowledging the possibilities of problems in translations, interpretation, or even the political and socio-economic desires of the original author(s).

What do you want to do for a living?
I’m still not entirely sure. Right now I want to work as a professor at a university doing research in marine conservation and toxicity while I teach. If at all possible I want to be able to combine my love of science and conservation with movies, and possibly work as a scientific advisor on movies and/or television. And when I retire I’m going on archaeological digs in Egypt.

If your friend was attacked (by a person, animal, or (in the magic world) beast), what would you do?
I’d kick it into gear, doing what I good to help them and get them to safety. I’d defend and help them to the best of my ability. My friends mean the world to me, and I don’t freeze up in those kinds of situations. Regardless of who/what was right or wrong, my first priority would be getting the two apart and one, most likely my friend, to safety.

Would you ever use an Unforgivable Curse for any reason?
I’d like to say no. But I haven’t been in every situation so I can’t say for sure. Not without extreme circumstances. If it was a me-or-them situation and nothing (and I do mean nothing) else worked, I might fall back on avadakedavra. I’d need some serious therapy afterwards, but I’d do it. If one of my friends or family members was trapped somewhere running out of air, and one person knew where they were and wouldn’t tell me, would I torture them with crucio as a last resort? I don’t know, but it’s not something I can completely rule out. I would never be able to forgive myself if I used one, but it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t. So we’ll go with a tentative yes, but with extreme circumstances.

What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?
Intelligence – I can see connections and patterns faster than a lot of people, and I can draw lines between different areas easier than a lot of others.

Loyalty – I will do anything I can for my friends and family, they are my biggest priority. I would never betray them no matter what, I know what that feels like, and I will support them no matter their decisions.

Optimism – I see the upside in everything. Sometimes it’s hard, but I work at it. I think hope is one of the most underestimated ideas in the world, and I always keep hope close to me, as faint as it may be. I try and share this with my friends when they’re down, try to keep them upbeat, make them laugh.

Passion – I have a great passion for almost everything I do, like a fire burning inside me. I believe what I do deeply, but I am open to other possibilities.

Openness – I try not to judge people, and accept them for who and what they are. I try and be as tolerant and as open to people and ideas as I want others to be.

What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?

Selfish – I’m not really really selfish, but I’ve spent enough time on my own trying to figure out who I am that sometimes I can be a little selfish.

Stubborn – Tell me I’m wrong (for no good reason) and I will dig in my heels and argue as much as possible for my point of view. Discussion and debate is one thing, but preach at me about anything and I get angry and stubborn. It also takes a lot to change my opinions, depending on the evidence and/or argument.

Gossip – I hate that I love gossip but I do, it’s a vice of mine. I don’t gossip about my friends but others, well, I can be a sucker for it and I’m trying to fix it. And it’s not Hollywood gossip, it’s the real life stuff.

Procrastination – I can be a horrible procrastinator which hasn’t gotten me into trouble yet but it’s not a good way to be.

Manipulative – I normally don’t use it for my own gain, but I can be manipulative and convince other people to do things my way.

Define in your own words the following key traits:

Courage:
Being scared, terrified, of something and doing/saying it anyway. Pushing through the fear. It’s not bravery if you’re not scared. That’s why some people who may seem weak at times can be the bravest people in the world (e.g. Neville).

Loyalty:
Not giving up on someone or something under any circumstances. Staying fast with an idea, an ideal, a person and not letting them be hurt for no good reason.

Intelligence:
Being able to be creative in thought and see something others don’t see and be able to communicate it, be it through speech, art, etc.

Ambition:
Having a drive for more, for something better. That something better may be different for different people, but as long as you want something more, then you have ambition, no matter what area of your life you have it in.
