If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

I'd have to change the way money, resources and rights are divided. I realise communism kinda hasn't worked in practice so far, so I'm not going to say 'yay for communisim' but I think capitalism kind of sucks.
I think it's unfair that somefamilys have everything and some have nothing.
It bothers me that for some people being a 'full time student' is a bludge, and for others getting a degree means they will be in debt for the rest of their lives.
I hate that Paris Hiltons DOG eats better than half the population of the world.
And it makes me ESPECIALLY cross that those who have the money are those who have the rights - to feel safe, to eat, have shelter - shouldn't everyone have those things? I think they should.
So if I could change one thing about the world it would be the unfair distribution of wealth.

What makes a person respectable?

I respect someone who is kind. I think it's the hardest thing in the world to be kind to people in a world that is so full of disappointment, cruelty, selfishness and harshness. I find people who are consistently kind, people who make kindness part of their character and their approach to live to be the bravest and most corageous I know/know of.
Doing the kind thing often means going out of your way, or putting yourself out, or sometimes even risking your own safety or comfort - so I think that makes being truly kind makes a person both corageous and respectable.

What do you look for in a friend?

I'm not really picky. I can usually find something I like in most people, though not without exception.
I have a lot of friends who other people would find annoying, or strange or weird, and I'm also not afraid to be friends with poeple who are way too cool for me - I get a lot out of my friendships because I'm friends with such a variety of people.
The friends I like the most are the ones who I can be myself with and, obviously have a laugh with (I was just thinking today just how great it is to really laugh *lol*). I love the friends who come over and don't mind that I'm in my pyjamas and we eat chocolate and ice cream and play geeky word games, or plat SingStar, or watch TV.

What are your hobbies?

Where do I begin!? I love geeking out on the internet, I love to paint and draw, and LOVE to write and read (fanfiction, poetry and all other things), I love word games (Scrabble, Snatch, Quiddler etc, etc.) and I play them a lot with my partner, and I love gardening and plants (though at the moment I don't have much of a garden at the moment because I live in the city with no backyard. I like to make quilts and do embroidery and stuff too. I'm quite a fiddly person, so I'm always doing something with my hands.

Have or would you give time and money to a charity?

Absolutely. Whenever I see anyone collecting for AIDS or Breast Cancer I give them ALL the money I have on me (no matter how much - seriously, even if I've just been to the bank and have a hundred bucks on me). In winter I feel especially bad for homeless people so I often give them money too.
I realise that I am a really, really lucky person, and being in that position makes me obliged to share where I can.

What is the one thing you would most like to accomplish?

I'm not a big goal setter. I'm certainly not aimless or without direction in life, but I'm one of those irritatingly zen people who is genuinely more interested in 'the journey'. I want to live a good, satisfying life. I want to love and be loved, eat good food, have a comfortable home, a successful career and be a respectable, honest, good person. Sure it would be great to cure cancer or something like that, but I'm aware of my limitations, and I know that I'm not the person to do those things. I am however, like everyone else, capable of living a worthwhile life and that's what I intend to do.

Who is your role model?

It's funny, because I've never thought of her in this way at all before, but when I read that question Angelina Jolie popped into my head, and I just thought - 'Huh? Why on earth would that have happened' and then I thought about it for a second.
She is an incredably graceful, beautiful talented woman, who knows that she has been placed in a position of extreme privelege, and instead of just lying back and enjoying it, she uses it to make a differencee. I respect and admire Bono for that same reason, and to a lesser extent Chris Martin.
I admire unfamous people for the same reasons I respect them - for being kind and living with integrity.
I kind of don't really think of them as role models so much as people who have their priorities in the right place and try to live by them

What trait most annoys you about other people?

Selfishnes and cruelty. The human race is destroying itself and its environment because so many people are too stupid and mean to think outside of their own interests and it just makes me angry. All the little acts of selfishness people commit add up into a really destructive force, so Iget really jacked off when I see that kind of behaviour in people.

What do you want to do for a living?

I'm actually in training to be a teacher and that is something I'm really, really excited about.
I am thrilled to be going into a career where I will be changing lives on a daily basis. It's scary too, being in a position of so much power - teachers have the capacity to really make life hard for kids (as Umbridge and Snape are ample proof of), and I really hope I will be able to have a positive impact on the lives I touch in my job.
It's also scary because, while I am a highly educated and reasonably bright person, I remember at school expecting the teacher to know EVERYTHING and I really don't, so I'm a little bit worried about that.

If your friend was attacked (by a person, animal, or (in the magic world) beast), what would you do?

First I would probably scream, because when scary things happen that is unfortunately what I tend to do. I'm not proud of this fact *lol*
Then I would do what I could to stop the atttack, but I would want to do as much as I could to help my friend so if me jumping right into the fray would only get both of us killed and not help my friend out at all, I would run instead as fast as I could to get help. If I thought I could bring the beast or animal down and save my friend in any way I would do that, though.

Would you ever use an Unforgivable Curse for any reason?

No. I really don't think there is any excuse for the use of these curses. They are called the Unforgivables for a reason. Also, there are plenty of other ways you can use to get the outcome you wanted that would be more reasonable (unless you actually did want to kill someone, which I never would), so you know I wouldn't use one in an extreme circumstance to save a friend - I'd think of an other spell or charm to protect them from an attacker.
I cannot think of any situation in which I would want to cause someone the kind of pain that crucio causes, and as Bellatrix pointed out in the last book you have to really want to hurt the person that much, and I don't think I really have that in me.
I think that apersons autonomy is extremely important, and their private thoughts are absolutely sacred, so the idea of imperius is really quite appalling to me. I would never use it, and if someone used it on me I wouldfeel so terrible.

What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?

OPEN HEARTED - I am a friendly, cheerful person who loves to make friends. I love having people over to cook and eat together, I love talking to people, and hearing about what matters to them. As I said before, a lot of my friends are people who other people think are a bit weird - if I was at Hogwarts with Luna Lovegood I would probably have been friends with her.

EXCELLENT SECRET KEEPER - For some reason people confide in me a lot. I've been told by a lot of people that I'm really easy to talk to, and people often end up telling me a lot more than they ever intended to - even people that don't know me that well. So I'm the keeper of a lot of secrets and I never tell. I'm very trustworthy in that way

CREATIVE - I value my creativity really highly. It think it's what has stopped me from going quite mad in the past, and I think it's indicative of a kind of inbuilt positivity in me. I like to use what happens in my life and make it into something useful or beautiful or good. I like to use my creativity to make other people happy. I make my own birthday cards, I do embroidered artworks for my mum and other close friends, I write stories for people, and I really like being able to give people really personal gifts, and to be able to use what talent I have to cheer people up or make them fee loved.

INTELLIGENT - I have an English degree and I could have gone on into honours, but I chose not to take that path and instead to do further postgraduate study to become and English teacher instead. I am also a big reader, and I love language and words. I really like to learn and to discover weird and wonderful stories and facts. I find History an endless source of fascination as well as botany, and many other subjects of inquiry.

DETERMINED - I work hard to get what I want, and it takes a lot to stop me from getting it. Even then I probably haven't been so much stopped but delayed *lol* I don't take the easy way out just because it's easy - I believe if something is worth fighting for or earning, then it should be faught for or earned, I'm not stubboprn for the sake of it and I choose my battles, but when my battle is chosen I usually win.

What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?

SOMETIMES RESENTFUL - I am a very generous and giving person, so when I am sometimes taken for granted or used I tend to get resentful about it. I try not to dwell, but I can hold a grudge for a while. I usually work out that I'm only hurting myself in the end and get over it, but yeah, I'm not always that smart to begin with

ONE TRACK MINDED - I find it really hard to focus on more than one thing at once. If I'm reading a book or working on a project (like this application for wexample) the house could burn down around me and I probably wouldn't notice. It does mean that I sometimes negelct other responsibilities in the singular pursuit of one.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS - I expect a lot of myself, and of others. I expect a level of honesty, of integrity, of thoughtfullnes, that are sometimes not possible for people to live up to. I am disappointed when people are rude, or thoughtless or unkind, because I expect them to be otherwise. I gues that makes me a bit NAIVE as well. so that can count as bad trait number 4.

FORGETFUL - I am super forgetful woth objects. I lose everyhting! It is really frustrating. At the beginning of the year I'll be 50 ball point pent in bulk and by April I will have lost them all. We have two pairs of scissors in our house and I NEVER know where either of them are. I'm am one of those people who would literally lose thier own head if it wasn't screwed on.

Define in your own words the following key traits:
Courage: Real courage is not bravado and showmanship but quietlly knowing and doing what is right, and standing up for it uncompromisingly when you have to.
Loyalty: Standing by those you love and what you believe in through anyhting. I think loyalty takes great courage, so that is why those two definitions are quite similar.
Intelligence: Having a brain and the capacity to use it. I think there are different kinds of intelligence and not everyone who is intelligent is intelligent in thw same way. Theres emotional intelligence, and creative intelligence and physical intelligence as well as logical, mathematical and literary intelligence.
Ambition: Ambition is setting your sights on something you want and working hard to achieve it.

What house do you think DOESN'T fit you? (This question is optional for those who feel they just DO NOT fit in a house. Please explain WHY.) I chose not to answer this question.
Where did you find out about us? I joined LJ specifically to participate in HP fandom, so I just did a search and you guys came up :)
