Hello there

What HP character do you identify with most and why?

Neville Longbottom. I certainly grew up as a bit of a dweeb. I wasn’t popular. I followed the rules even if it alienated me from friends, much like Neville in the Gryffindor common room. I was (and still am) a nerd but I did have a bit of a social transformation like Neville did in Order of the Phoenix, albeit later in life.

My Trevor was my letterman jacket in high school. How do you get a letterman jacket and not be cool? Instead of sports, I received mine for academic competition in Computer Science. It had an “academic lamp” which looked like a genie lamp.

What one moment in the books was the most meaningful to you?

So I haven’t read the books and I’m basing this on the movies, or whatever I’ve read about HP online. I liked the confrontation and duel between McGonagall and Snape after Harry returns to Hogwarts. After Harry reveals himself in the Great Hall, Snape pulls out his wand. McGonagall immediately moves in front of Harry to protect him. Then before Snape casts anything, she unloads a barrage of attacks him. The fierceness to protect Harry is fantastic. There’s no talk about how dare he pull a wand out. She’s just attacking again and again until there’s no longer a target standing. I strive to protect the ones I love like this, if need be. The second part I love about it is when Snape deflects the attacks, they take out the two henchmen behind him. It’s too convenient for it not to be him intentionally letting them be taken out before he leaves, since he was always on Harry’s side.

What would you see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised?

I would probably be taking a nap, completely relaxed with truly not a care in the world. I feel tired and stressed most days.

If you were to become headmaster at Hogwarts, what is one thing you would change about the school or how it operates?

I would like to see a mentorship program implemented to foster learning and growth with younger students. I would have them pair with older select students, or former students out in the world.

If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it, and what would you call it?

A sleeping mask that allows you to get twice as much restfulness from sleep. So if you wear it at bedtime, you only need to sleep 4 hours to feel like to slept 8 hours. Of course, I’d probably still not get enough rest.

You have to venture deep into the Forbidden Forest one night. Pick one Harry Potter character other than Hagrid and one object (muggle or magical), besides your wand, that you'd want with you.

I’d take Professor Sprout and the Sword of Gryffindor. The forest is full of plants and I’m sure she’d not only be helpful to have along, but she would probably also enjoy some of it. And it’s a bad-ass sword. It seems it can kill just about anything, so I feel my chances of surviving the Forbidden Forest would be decent with that and my wand.

What was your ideal job as a child? What is your ideal job now? Do you think it would be the same in the Wizarding World?

As a child, it was between a Chef and an Architect. I saw both jobs are creatively artistic while providing usefulness. People have to eat. Shelter is necessary. I’ve never been great at art, but I still enjoy the process.

Now, it’s an air traffic controller. It seemed a fairly technical career that wouldn’t get boring day after day and so far I enjoy it.

I might try some magical cooking, but with magic, I think I’d like to make useful things. I’d like to invent little things you have around to help you with life. The Deluminator that Ron had seemed super handy, aside from producing small balls of light that penetrate the heart.

What kinds of decisions are the most difficult for you to make?

Probably the ones involving moderate amounts of money. Buying a house? Difficult, but well worth the time to run risk assessment on it and figure out if it’s a good deal. New brand of peanut butter at the store? Sure, it’s setting me back $6, but it’s not breaking the bank and if it’s not good, I don’t buy it again. But when it’s about $100, that’s when things seem to be difficult as to if the time I put into researching the product or service would be worth it, and then there’s still a decent chance it’s a dud.

If you had the opportunity to live forever, under what conditions would you accept? And if you did choose to live forever, what would you do with eternity?

I would do it under the conditions that I maintain health and stay in visual age range of 20-50. I’d attempt to live a thousand lives. I’d try out various simple lives. Be a farmer or a lumberjack. I’d become a scholar or writer. I’d eventually try to be someone famous, then follow that lifetime up with a couple in seclusion, maybe just living in the wild or as a monk in a remote place. I’d dedicate 40-60 years towards each flavor of life and then start over with something else.

What is one thing you would never want said about you?

That I didn’t try at something I wanted.

Do you believe that moral actions should be judged by the intentions behind them, or by the consequences they create?

Yes. I believe they should be judge on both those factors and not singularly on one of them. If you judge only based on intentions, you risk devaluing the consequences of actions, and vice versa. My students in the military, for example, would write reports an format the text editor a certain way. I was very big on doing things whichever way works best for you, so I’ll let them do their thing. However, I ask them their reasoning for formatting it the they did. In one format, a single button would cause them to lose whatever they wrote if they hadn’t used the save button. If it’s not formatted this way, the buttons are harmless, and the process of saving work is slightly longer. I would give my students enough freedom to lose their work once, then I’d make them re-write the report after they lost it. The intention of formatting to use the buttons in order to save time is good, but the consequences of losing your work sets you back further than you would get ahead. The consequences here seem more important, but it’s also important for them to have the right intention of getting the reports done quickly, which will help them out throughout their careers.

What do you look for in a friend?

Someone who laughs at the same things and has the near same energy levels. I’m alright with people being a bit more energetic or low-key than me, but too much of a difference would likely ruin my vibe with them.

What trait most annoys you about other people?

Probably selfishness. If someone is always only concerned with themselves, I’m likely to be annoyed by them.

What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?

Long-term planner - I play out scenarios in my head a lot. Helps me be prepared when things go wrong to minimize the impacts and keep things from snowballing.
Punctual - I show up on time to the best of my ability. I hate being late so I’m always leaving early, much to the disdain of my wife.
Resilient/Optimist - I almost always try to find the silver lining. I try to not dwell on the bad things that happen, there’s not much use for it.
Team player - Teams can get a lot done when everyone uses their strengths and lets others on the team make up for their weaknesses. I’m the one that’s likely to do the part of the job that no one else on the team wants to do, but it has to get done anyways.
Helpful - Sometimes it’s self serving, but I try to help with no expectation of a favor returned. I feel like most people like me more for it, and sometimes they’ll offer help to me later when I need it.

What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?

Sloth - I many times mess around and don’t do the things I should be doing. This post, for example, has taken me awhile to complete, just sitting on my laptop, collecting cyberdust.
Social anxiety, leading me to be asocial - On the surface, I feel I’m pretty decent at being social, but underneath there’s tons of anxiety and it holds me back from social situations.
Lisp/speech issues - It was pointed out to me in the 6th grade that I had a lisp and I’ve been kind of conscious about it since then. It’s mostly controlled and I can get around it if I take the time to pronounce things a bit more clearly, but it’s there when I’m lazy. I also get hung up on some words when talking, and in my head it sounds fine, but I’ve listened to recordings and it’s a painfully long pause between words. That and repeating words in a sentence.
Fear of failure - I won’t start or attempt some things for fear of failing at it. I’ve been good at a lot of things and I hate being bad at something, so if it’s similar to something I’ve failed at before, I likely won’t even try it.
Defensive - I’m pretty defensive of some of my ways. I’m set in them and they work for me. If someone tries talking me into a different way of doing something, I could easily be rude with them for challenging my way of doing it.
